CIAMS is proud to congratulate Adjunct Associate Professor Jeffrey Zorn on the publication of the first three volumes on the excavation of Area G at the site of Tel Dor, in Israel. Professor Zorn was responsible for this area of the excavations, and is a principal co-author of the volumes, along with Dr. Ilan Sharon and Dr. Ayelet Gilboa, co-directors of the project, and Dr. Sveta Matskevitch, a researcher at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Tel Dor is a circa eight hectare site north of Caesarea on the coast of Israel. It was occupied, more or less continuously, from the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 2000 BCE) to the Roman era (ca. 200 CE), with some occupation in the Byzantine and Crusader periods. Excavations have been ongoing, with periodic breaks, from 1980 to the present. Area G, ca. 450 m2 in maximum area, is the only excavation area in the center of the tel, and was excavated from 1986 until 2004. Area G was targetted specifically to give an idea of the nature of the urban core of the site. Excavations in this area revealed a copper/bronze resmelting area (Phases 12-10) of the Late Bronze to early Iron I Ages; a Canaanite style house (Phases 9-6) of Iron I to Iron IIa; poorly preserved remains of the end of the Iron Age (Phase 5); Persian Period pits (Phase 4); public and domestic architecture of the Hellenistic Period (Phase 3-2); and monumental architecture associated with a colonnaded plaza of the Roman Period (Phase 1).
The three volumes published this year cover the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age periods of occupation, with subsequent volumes to be published in the coming years on the Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. The present volumes (Qedem 10, 11 and 12), about 950 pages in all, contain approximately 725 in-page illustrations, 150 tables, and 150 plates, plans and other full-page images. These volumes are a monumental contribution to the scholarship of these periods and this region, and will be a vital resource for future researchers.
