CIAMS professor Ben Anderson has recently co-edited a volume with Felipe Rojas, a professor from Brown University (and former RadioCIAMS guest), entitled Antiquarianisms: Contact, Conflict, Comparison. Contributors include Felipe Rojas, Alfredo Gonzalez-Ruibal, Byron Ellsworth Hamann, former RadioCIAMS guest Steve Kosiba, Giuseppe Marcocci, Emeily Neumeier, Eva-Maria Troelenberg, Ben Anderson, and Peter N. Miller. The volume addresses antiquarianism and collecting, traditions that have been most closely associated with European imperialism and colonialism but which existed before the early modern period and have been and continue to be practiced in non-European places:
This book concerns the divide between local and foreign antiquarianisms focusing on case studies drawn primarily from the Mediterranean and the Americas. Both regions host robust pre-modern antiquarian traditions that have continued to develop during periods of colonialism. In both regions, moreover, colonial encounters have been mediated by the antiquarian practices and preferences of European elites.
